Strengthening Tanzania’s Global Academic Footprint through the TANZIE Capacity Building Workshop

In a vibrant demonstration of international collaboration and academic excellence, Mzumbe University (MU) hosted the launch of the First TANZIE Training of Trainers Workshop and Management Meeting at its Main Campus in Morogoro. The three-day event, held from 7th to 9th October 2025, marked a major milestone in strengthening higher education partnerships between Europe and Tanzania.

The event brought together TANZIE partners from across the globe, including the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD), the University of Alicante (UA), and the University of Saarland (USAAR) from Europe, alongside five Tanzanian institutions: the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU), Mzumbe University (MU), the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST), the Muslim University of Morogoro (MUM), and the Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences (CUHAS).

The workshop was officially opened by Prof. Charles Kihampa, Executive Secretary of TCU, who commended the TANZIE partnership for its commitment to advancing the internationalisation of higher education in Tanzania. He emphasised that initiatives such as TANZIE are instrumental in enhancing institutional capacity, fostering global competitiveness, and promoting cross-border academic cooperation.

In his remarks, Prof. Kihampa noted that the training represents more than just knowledge exchange, it is a strategic investment aimed at strengthening the internationalisation agendas of university institutions. “Through collaboration and capacity building, we are setting the stage for Tanzanian universities to engage more effectively on the global academic stage,” he said.

Over the three days, participants will take part in intensive sessions covering the fundamentals of internationalisation, mobility programmes, quality assessment, fundraising for academic initiatives, and the development of institutional strategic action plans. Facilitators from the European partner institutions are expected to share practical tools, case studies, and methodologies designed to equip Tanzanian educators and administrators with the skills needed to integrate internationalisation into university policies and practices.

As the TANZIE initiative continues to gain momentum, the Morogoro workshop stands as a testament to the shared vision of European and Tanzanian institutions to nurture globally competent graduates and strengthen the international profile of Tanzania’s higher education sub-sector.
