TCU Strengthens Quality Teaching: Over 200 University Academics Equipped with Pedagogical Skills in National Capacity-Building Workshop

The Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting quality teaching and learning in university education through a capacity development workshop on pedagogical skills for non-educational members of academic staff from various university institutions across the country.

The three-day workshop, held from 29th September to 1st October 2025 at Magadu Hotel, Mzinga Corporation in Morogoro, brought together 205 participants from both public and private universities. The training aimed at equipping participants with essential pedagogical knowledge and practical competencies to enhance their teaching effectiveness and foster a more engaging learning environment for students.

In his officiating remarks, the Executive Secretary of TCU, Prof. Charles Kihampa, underscored the importance of equipping all academic staff, regardless of their field of specialization, with sound pedagogical skills. He noted that while many university lecturers possess deep subject matter expertise, effective knowledge transfer requires a firm grounding in teaching methodologies and learner engagement strategies.

“Quality university education is not only determined by the depth of academic content but also by how that knowledge is delivered to inspire and empower students,” Prof. Kihampa emphasised. He added that TCU remains steadfast in its mission to enhance academic standards and uphold excellence across the higher education landscape in Tanzania.

The workshop covered a range of key topics, including innovative teaching methods, classroom management, student-centred learning, assessment techniques, and the integration of digital tools in higher education. Participants engaged in interactive sessions, group discussions, and practical exercises designed to strengthen their instructional capacity and encourage reflective teaching practices.

Speaking on behalf of the participants, several lecturers expressed appreciation to TCU for organising the training, describing it as both timely and transformative. They noted that the workshop had expanded their understanding of effective teaching and learning approaches, and they were eager to apply the new techniques in their respective institutions.

“This workshop has given us a new perspective on how to make our classes more engaging and impactful. It has reminded us that teaching is not only about delivering content but about inspiring curiosity and fostering critical thinking among students,” remarked one participant.

The initiative forms part of TCU’s ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of higher education by strengthening institutional capacity, ensuring effective teaching practices, and upholding national standards of academic excellence. Through such programmes, the Commission continues to play a pivotal role in nurturing a dynamic, competent, and pedagogically skilled academic workforce capable of advancing Tanzania’s higher education agenda.
